How to use a LET reviewer without wasting your time
The reviewers going around online cover the exam unevenly, and none of them tell you what they skip. The blueprint is the checklist; the reviewer only fills it in.
Most people getting ready for the Licensure Examination for Teachers start by collecting files. A PDF from a friend. A set of Gen Ed questions. A majorship handout from a review center. Maybe a printed book. Within a week there are six files and no plan.
Why does your LET reviewer matter less than how you use it?
The files are rarely the problem. Two people can work from the same reviewer and end up prepared very differently, because the reviewer decides what you read while your method decides what you keep. A tall stack creates a feeling of readiness that the exam does not reward.
There is also a quieter issue, and it is the one worth sitting with. A reviewer can only show you what it holds. It cannot tell you what it left out, and what it left out stays hidden precisely because nothing points at it. You finish the file, feel done, and never learn that a whole subject area went unmentioned.
No set of materials announces its own gaps. That is not a flaw in any particular reviewer. It is what a document is.
What is actually on the LET?
The exam is set by the Professional Regulation Commission, which publishes a Table of Specification listing the subject areas and how they are weighted. Secondary examinees sit General Education, Professional Education and a majorship. Elementary examinees sit General Education and Professional Education.
That published structure is the most useful document you have, and it is not the one most people study from. Because it comes from outside your own materials, it can show a gap that your materials never could. In practice it does three things: it fixes the scope, so you stop guessing at what counts as covered; it gives the weight of each area, so the heavy ones get more of your time; and it gives you a checklist to measure your reviewer against.

How do you build a plan from the Table of Specification?
Start from the blueprint and work back to your materials, instead of starting from whatever file you happen to have.
List every subject area from the Table of Specification
One document, every area, nothing else in it. This is your master checklist, and it is the only part of your setup that did not come from your own materials.
Mark what your materials actually cover
Go through each reviewer and tag every area as well covered, thin, or not there at all. Do this with the files open. Doing it from memory measures your confidence rather than your coverage.
Rank the gaps by weight
A heavy area your materials barely touch comes first. A light area you already know comes last. The blueprint sets that order, which is the point of working from it.
Assign areas to weeks, not days
Weekly blocks survive a missed evening. Daily plans break the first time work runs late, and then the whole schedule feels like something you have already failed at.
End each session by answering questions
Not by rereading. Closing the file and recalling what you can is the part that does the work, and it is the part that gets cut when a session runs long.
If you are working, plan around that rather than pretending it is not there. Two focused hours on a weekday plus a longer weekend block beats a big schedule you drop in week three. And if you are torn between a review center and self-review, the honest answer is that structure is most of what a review center sells. You can build the same structure yourself, but only if you will actually hold to it.
What does the research say about reviewing?
Two findings are worth knowing, because both cut against how most people study. The first is that testing yourself beats rereading. In the best-known experiment on this, students who kept testing themselves on a passage recalled substantially more of it a week later than students who simply reread the same passage for the same amount of time.
Roediger & Karpicke (2006), Test-Enhanced Learning, Psychological Science. On the one-week delayed test, repeated retrieval produced roughly 61 percent recall against roughly 40 percent for repeated study.
Rereading feels better because the words look familiar on the second pass. Familiar is not the same as remembered, and the exam asks for the second one.
The second finding is that spacing beats cramming. In a review of ten study techniques, Dunlosky and colleagues (2013) rated practice testing and distributed practice as the only two high-utility methods, and rated rereading and highlighting, the two most popular, as low utility. What are the most common mistakes?
- Collecting instead of reviewing. Downloading a tenth reviewer is not preparation. It delays it, and it feels like progress while it does.
- Rereading and calling it studying. Rereading builds recognition. The exam asks for recall.
- Trusting a reviewer’s coverage. No reviewer flags its own gaps, so check it against the Table of Specification rather than against your sense of how thorough it felt.
- Skipping the areas you dislike. The blueprint sets the weight, not your taste. The area you avoid usually costs the most.
- Running a side plan at home. If you are enrolled somewhere, follow that program. Otherwise your attention is split across two half-built systems.
- Planning for a version of you with more time. A plan that assumes you are never tired will not survive a working week.
Questions people ask
Is a free LET reviewer good enough? Usually yes, as raw material. The questions and explanations in the files going around are often sound. The risk is coverage rather than quality: free reviewers are assembled by different people for different reasons, so they cluster around popular topics and leave others untouched.
Where do I find the Table of Specification? It is published through PRC channels and widely redistributed by teacher-education programs. What matters is that it comes from outside your own study materials, which is what makes it able to reveal something they cannot.
How long before the exam should I start? That depends on your circumstances, and someone working full-time needs a longer runway. What matters more than the total is that the review is spread across it rather than squeezed into the final weeks.
Review center or self-review? Review centers mainly sell structure: a schedule, an order, and the pressure to keep to both. Self-review can match that if you build the same structure deliberately. The decision is usually an honest read on whether that structure will exist without someone else imposing it.
